Phonics
At Keep Hatch we understand that learning to read is a life-long skill that can unlock enjoyment and independent learning. It is key to academic success and therefore is of great importance. The EEF considers phonics to be one of the most secure, and best-evidenced areas of pedagogy and phonics teaching is widely recognised as a vital component in the development of early reading. Therefore, we provide high-quality and consistent phonics sessions that allow children to learn, practise and embed the required skills to become successful, independent readers.
Our reading curriculum ensures children have opportunities to: Read for Practice, Read for Meaning and Read for Pleasure. We follow Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme which ensures children have opportunities to: read for accuracy, fluency and comprehension. These focus areas underpin our rationale for repeated reading and overlearning.
Phonics teaching is delivered daily to all early readers, regardless of their age. If a child needs phonics to progress with their reading, it is made accessible to them in a variety of ways including: small group teaching, 1-1 tuition or online classroom. We use frequent, robust assessment so that all children make good progress.
Phonics is a vital part of every child’s learning as it is the building block on which our curriculum is based on.
