French
At Keep Hatch, we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a diverse society and provides a valuable opening to another culture. By the time children leave Keep Hatch, we intend that they will have a secure understanding of the basics of the French language. Our Key Stage 2 curriculum is firmly structured around the identified four Golden Threads of Phonology, Grammatical Structure, Vocabulary and Cultural Awareness so that children will speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, whilst continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. By the end of Year 6, children will be able to write in French at greater length using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
We teach French across Key Stage 2 using a scheme of work and linked resources created by Sue Cave, a language learning specialist, which we know appropriately challenges and engages our young learners. The curriculum ensures clear, well-sequenced progression of listening, speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French.
At the end of Year 6, our children leave Keep Hatch well prepared for successful, ongoing language learning in Key Stage 3 in their secondary settings.
Celebrating a love of languages with days like The European Day of Languages as well as our France Focus Day across the whole school, both of which take place in the autumn term.
